New sermon series starting this Sunday, February 21st from the book of Jonah! Below is a bit of info to prepare you as we dig into God's Word together!
The theme of Jonah is that the Lord is a God of boundless compassion not just for “us” his followers who already believe, but also for those outside the faith, who are represented by pagan sailors and Ninevites. This theme is clear from the beginning to the end of Jonah. Jonah is the object of God’s compassion throughout the book.
Some other themes in the book would include: 1. God’s sovereign control over events on the earth 2. God’s determination to get His message to the nations 3. The need for repentance from sin in general 4. The need for repentance from self-centeredness and hypocrisy in particular 5. The full assurance that God will relent when people repent
The primary purpose of this book is to engage readers in a reflection on the compassionate nature of God. The secondary purpose is then to cause the reader to think about how their own compassion to others reflects God’s compassion for them, and how we are to be vehicles of God’s compassion to the world. Jonah serves as a type of Christ, passing on God’s grace to the world. We will see in the weeks to come that God uses Jonah as a method to share His grace, even though Jonah isn’t a completely willing participant.
